The Skunk Ladder 1
1. bellow (v.)-to shout in a loud voice, or (of a cow or large animal) to make a loud, deep sound
2. feat (n.)- something difficult needing a lot of skill, strength, courage, etc. to achieve it
3. savage (adj.)- extremely violent, wild, or frightening
4. abandoned (v./adj.)-to leave a place, thing, or person, usually for ever
5. attempt (n./v.)- to try to do something, especially something difficult
6. cavern (n.)- a large cave

8. ledge (n.)- a narrow shelf that sticks out from a vertical surface
9. scale (v.)- to climb up a steep surface, such as a wall or the side of a mountain, often using special equipment
10. inspect (v.)-to look at something or someone carefully in order to discover information, especially about their quality or condition
11. excavation (n.)- the act of removing earth that is covering very old objects buried in the ground in order to discover things about the past
12. apparently (adv.)- used to say that something seems to be true, although it is not certain
13. prehistoric (adj.)- describing the period before there were written records
14. distinguish (v.)- to notice or understand the difference between two things, or to make one person or thing seem different from another
15. individual (adj.)- a single person or thing, especially when compared to the group or set to which they belong
16. antitourist (adj.)- against tourists
17. ordinary (adj.)- not different or special or unexpected in any way; usual
18. nearly (adv.)-almost, or not completely
19. creek (n.)- a narrow area of water that flows into the land from the sea, a lake, etc.
20. apparatus (n.)- a set of equipment or tools or a machine that is used for a particular purpose
21. surface (v.)- to rise to the surface of water
22. nervous condition (n.)- a health problem relating to the nerves or nervous system
23. recall (v.)- to bring the memory of a past event into your mind, and often to give a description of what you remember
24. awfully (adv.)- very or extremely, when used before an adjective or adverb
25. suspiciously (adv.)-in a way that makes you think that something is wrong
26. demand (v.)- to ask for something forcefully, in a way that shows that you do not expect to be refused
27. shudder (v.)- to shake suddenly with very small movements because of a very unpleasant thought or feeling
28. shift (v.)- to move the gears of a vehicle into different positions in order to make it go faster or slower
29. envelope (v.)- to cover or surround something completely
30. expression (n.)- the look on someone's face, showing what they feel or think
